Verner became the first man from the Czech Republic to win Europeans in 16 years when he took the title in 2008. Petr Barna was European Champion in 1992. Verner's older brother Miroslav competed in pair skating at the junior level. Verner moved to Canada for training in summer 2010 but returned to long-time coach Michael Huth to Germany in summer 2013.
