Van der Perren became the first male skater from Belgium to medal at the European Championships in 50 years when he earned the bronze in 2007. Fernand Leemans had taken the bronze at the 1947 European Championships. Van der Perren was also the first Belgian skater ever to medal at Junior World Championships (silver in 2002). Van der Perren has landed a quad toe-triple toe-triple toe combination at the 2010 Worlds and triple-triple-triple combinations in competition. He broke his wrist in the SP at the 2012 Europeans and withdrew before the Free Skating. Van der Perren started to skate as a ten-year-old after watching an ice show. At that time, it was his dream to star in the show. Van der Perren underwent hip surgery in April 2008. He got married to single skater Jenna McCorkell (GBR) on May 17, 2008.
