Winkler/Lohse were the first East German ice dancers after many years and had to work with pair skating coach
Knut Schubert in the beginning. After the German reunification, they moved to Oberstdorf to train with Skotnicky.
Both skaters joined the German army, which sponsors athletes. Lohse injured ligaments in his knee in November
2001, and the team had to miss the 2002 National and European Championships. They also missed the 2003 World
Championships due to injury. Lohse injured again ligaments in his knee just a few days before the 2004 European
Championships, and the couple was forced to miss the competition.
